Refining Your Post With These Options

Wordpress.com provides few extra options that you can use to refine your post before publishing it for the whole world to see.  These options can be found on the Add New Post page (click the Add New link on the Posts menu).

These options include:

  • Excerpt: Although excerpt has no word limit, you should use excerpt to show short summaries of your blog posts. Showing teasers of your posts will encourage the reader to read the whole post by clicking on the Read More link.
  • Send Trackbacks: Trackbacks are comments that left on your blog by other blogs. For more information about trackback, please read What is Trackback? If you would like to send a trackback to another blog, please enter that blog’s trackback URL in the Sent Trackbacks To box. You can send trackbacks to more than one blog by separating trackback URLs with spaces.
  • Custom field
  • Discussion: You can enable/disable wordpress comment system, pings and trackbacks. By selecting the Allow comments on this post checkbox, you allow reader to submit feedback through the comment system. By selecting the Allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this post checkbox, you enable pings and trackback.
  • Publish: You have three options for saving or publishing your post when you are done with the writing. These three options include:
    • Status: Click the Edit link next to the status option and a new menu appears with the following options:
      • Pending Review: Select this option to set the post status as pending.
      • Draft: Select this option to save the post in draft form. You can edit draft at a later time.

      Click Ok button when you are done to save your settings.

    • Visibility: A new menu appears when you click the Edit link next to the Visibility option. There are two options in the menu:
      • Public: Choosing this option publishes your post to your blog for the entire to see. You can publish this post to the very top of your blog by choosing Stick This Post to Your Front Page. The post will stay on top of your blog until you edit the status at a later date.
      • Password Protect: This option allows you to protect a post with a password. Reader must key in password in order to read the post. When you select this option, a text box appears where you type the password for this post.

      Click Ok button when you are done to save your settings.

    • Publish Immediately: Click the Edit link next to the Publish Immediately option and a new menu appears where you can set the date of a post. This allows you to schedule a post and publish it on a specified date. You can also date-back a post to publish on a date in the past.
    • Click Ok button when you are done to save your settings.

    When you have chosen a publishing status, click the Publish button.

  • Tags: Tags can be single or several words. You need to separate tags with commas.
  • Categories: You can file your posts in different categories. Select the box to the left of the category that you would like to use. You can create a new category by clicking the Add New Category link at the bottom of the Categories box.

Once you are done setting these options, please click Save Draft button on the top right side of the page to save the settings. Please be aware that these settings are applied only to the post you are working on. They do not apply to any future or past posts you make.
