How to Create Protected Pages in WordPress

WordPress is one of the best tools available to easily upload blog posts and web site content.  For most people, using WordPress is convenient so anyone browsing to the website has access to the material provided.  However, there are some who wish to provide a members’ only area to their site with pages that are only available for viewing from those who are approved, registered users.  In order to do this, you need to know how to set up protected, members’ only pages in WordPress.  This will require you to set up a password for the page for anyone you want able to view the page.

In the Admin section of the WordPress blog you will need to set up a page or a post.  Both a page and a post can be password protected.  All you need to do is click on the “Password Protect this Post” or “Password Protect this Page” link.  This will then bring up an option where you can enter a password.  Once you do this and publish it, anyone who tries to access that page will need the password in order to view it.

There is another option for creating Protected pages in WordPress, however.  There are available plugins that you can upload to your site that will automatically password protect pages.  This is a great option when you are dealing with multiple pages you want password protected as opposed to a single one.  WordPress has these plugins available for download directly from their site.  Simply go to the WordPress website and search for “Protected Pages” (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/better-protected-pages/).  You can choose from the plugins available that will do what you need them to.  Follow the directions for installation and you can have your own members’ only pages or posts.

Protected pages or members’ only pages in WordPress are a great way to give sneak previews or share proprietary information that is viewable only to those who are allowed access.  You can set up your own criteria for viewing this information and share it accordingly by either using the admin panel or an easy to use plugin.
