WordPress is one of the most popular vehicles for blogging available on the Internet today. The reason for this is that WordPress is easy to use and easy to customize. There are multiple plugins available to assist you with your blogging goals. One of the most important aspects to any blog, though, is getting people to your site. Advertising and marketing efforts will help expose your site to the general public. However, the first place you should start is to ensure you have a high placement in search engines. This process is called search engine optimization, commonly known as SEO.

SEO means that you make your site more easily indexed by search engines so that when someone searches for particular keywords that relate to your site, your site will come up within the first few results. There are many ways you can optimize your site so that this works best for you. WordPress has multiple plugins available to help you. Choose from the top 10:

All in One SEO is a WordPress Plugin that does what its name implies: just about everything. This is the perfect plugin for those who do not want to install multiple applications but still want the versatility to do a lot of SEO functions. What this plugin will accomplish is SEO for titles, descriptions, keywords, no index of duplicate content, per post and per page modifications of default data to be more SEO friendly.

Platinum SEO is another all inclusive plugin designed to make SEO options quick and easy without having to install multiple applications. This is perfect for the beginner WordPress user who wants to ensure good SEO without a lot of hassle. Titles, meta tags, duplicate content settings, permalink settings, indexing, archiving, following, post and page settings are all addressed in one easy to use plugin.

Redirection is perfect for any time you need to change your links on your WordPress blog. When this occurs you run the risk of losing any search engine indexing that has already occurred. However, with this plugin you can manage your redirects so you do not lose any indexing plus get a listing of any 404 page errors so hey can be fixed as soon as possible. This plugin is available in over 10 languages.

No Follow Case by Case is a plugin that allows you to tell search engine bots whether or not to index or follow a particular link on your site. This way, you can have relevant links indexed appropriately without giving benefit to others’ sites who post links to help promote their own blogs. You can choose to have a search engine follow those you wish to support and not to follow others on a case by case basis.

SEO for Paged Comments is especially handy for busy interactive sites. If you have an interactive community where you have a lot of people commenting on your posts you run the risk of having multiple pages for comments. This alone is not a bad thing; a busy blog is great. However, if you have multiple pages of comments the original post will appear on each page and each page is its own link. The problem occurs with search engines that may penalize you for duplicate content. This plugin eliminates this by posting an excerpt with a link as opposed to the entire text.

If you do need to have duplicate content for some reason you will need to address this for SEO purposes and SEO No Duplicate plugin will take care of that for you. It allows you to have duplicate content on your site for visitors to see but you can identify the parent post that you want to get indexed and followed and any additional versions that you want ignored. This will ensure you do not get penalized for duplicate content while allowing it to be seen.

SEO Friendly Images is a plugin that makes creating “ALT” tags easier and ensures your embedded images help your SEO. Because images are a valuable tool in assisting with your page ranking, it is important to optimize them as much as possible and this tool makes it easy and quick.

Google Sitemap Generator is a great tool for SEO to create a sitemap for use in indexing. However, even though it was designed specifically for Google, the most popular search engine, many others use this format as well. So, if you want to get high placement on Yahoo, MSN and Google, this is a great place to start to automatically generate the sitemap without needing any coding knowledge.

Tag Cloud Widget is a plugin that allows you to use tag clouds without having the indexing problems normally associated with their use. While attractive, they are typically not readable by indexing bots and therefore do not get the benefit of SEO. With this widget it converts the tags to HTML so they can be read easily.

Related Entries is a helpful plugin that allows you to take full advantage of SEO possibilities using internal links. This plugin finds other posts within your site that are related to the original one and links to it. This way viewers can browse easily to additional content within your site while allowing you the benefit of increased SEO all at once.

With the inclusion of some of these handy SEO plugins you can optimize your site quickly and easily without needing to learn any extensive SEO tricks or hire a coder. The top ten SEO plugins for WordPress will take care of a lot of the necessary activity for you quickly and easily. You can increase exposure to your site via better search engine placement and increase your SEO with very little effort when you use these handy tools.

Another useful reading resource to help you with this can be found within the manual under ‘Stepping in to templates’. If you are sure all this makes sense then you are ready to start creating templates for Wordpress.

XHTML/CSS resources

If you would like to obtain a good working knowledge of both of these, a great resource for those new to web programming or those moving over from older languages is www.w3schools.com. Here you can find hundreds of tutorials, scripts and quizzes to help you get your head around things, and working in conjunction with this you will need a text editor. Notepad++ is a popular choice, and we recommend the Firefox web developer toolbar so you can test and check your coding. It is brilliant when you are making live changes to your CSS.

Graphic design resources

You are going to find life so much easier if you have a decent graphics package on your computer. Photoshop and Fireworks are two of the best for the job, and this is where you will create your graphics. The issues you need to consider for your Wordpress templates are things like color schemes, fonts and images. For inspiration there are a number of resources. www.designmeltdown.com is a good site for ideas, as are the gallery pages of www.cssbeauty.com that have collected some of the most excellent examples of sites that look good.

You need to come up with a clear color scheme that presents the image you are seeking, and if these sites do not help inspire you enough, try checking out somewhere like beta.dailycolorscheme.com where you can see hundreds of schemes and download them too. Finally some of the best inspiration for color schemes comes from life, so browsing through photographs on a site like Flickr can also prove invaluable. Free fonts can be downloaded, or you can purchase professional ones from Linotype, and the same goes for images free stock that can be found at SXC, whereas paid for images are found at iStockPhoto.

Finally you need to have an understanding of plugins, and you need to learn how to install them and when you should be installing them. Some great plugins can be found at WP-Plugins.net. Overall the best tip we can offer you is to read plenty on the net about Wordpress and Wordpress templates – and above all enjoy!

Having a Wordpress blog is good. Optimizing your blog to rank well in the search engines is better. After all, why would you go to all the trouble of creating a blog and not pay attention to the detail of making sure the search engines will find you and better yet, love you. When you have a good ranking in the search engines it naturally follows that you will receive more traffic to your blog. One way to improve your search engine rankings is to install free plugins into your Wordpress blog.

On note of caution, don’t stuff your blog full of plugins. Carefully choose which plugin(s) you want based on the features. I also like to use plugins that seem to have a good support system. When I see a plugin support homepage that looks outdated or underused, that is a good sign to me that there will not be anyone to help me with this plugin if difficulties arise.

So, what are some good plugins that will increase you Wordpress rankings? This article will discuss some plugins that are useful when you are trying to get your Wordpress blog to rank well.

Broken Link Check 0.5: Often blog posts will have links to outside pages. When these pages are no longer active this becomes a broken link on your post and broken links are frowned upon by the search engines, therefore, it is important that you not have any broken links on your site. The Broken Link Check plugin will alert you to broken links so you can fix them. With this plugin you can:

Check your links in the blogroll

Receive broken link notification immediately

Have your links on one page so you can view, edit, remove links all from the same page

View broken link information in a dashboard widget

When you edit or delete a link, bookmarks, custom fields and posts will be updated automatically. Awesome!!

SEO Smart Links: Search engines love to see interlinking going on in your blog. This means that you will be linking to other pages/posts within your blog. SEO Smart Links connects keywords and keyword phrases contained in your posts and comments to your corresponding posts, categories, pages and tags that are on your posts. This is all done automatically after you have configured it in the admin panel. You have complete control over this entire process with options you may customize. With SEO Smart Links you can:

Link keywords and keyword phrases within your post to other posts, pages, and comments

Set up a list of keywords that you do not want to link to

Use customized keywords to control the external links

Enable caching to speed things up

Set up links to open in a new window

Google XML Sitemaps Generator: Submitting a XML sitemap to Google is like telling Google that you are on the web and what you have to offer. It’s like an invitation for the search engine spiders to come on over and check out your site. Although it is called Google XML Sitemaps Generator, the format works for Yahoo!, Bing (formerly MSN search) and Ask.com. This plugin also alerts the search engines to any changes in your blog. When this happens, the spiders come running back for another look to see what’s new. All this spider activity will help your Wordpress blog to rank better for your keywords and keyword phrases.

All in One SEO Pack: With this plugin you can customize post titles, descriptions and tags. When you do this customization, it helps you improve your search engine optimization. This is a fairly sophisticated plugin, but that should not intimidate you. It is designed to work upon installation with no programming, however, if you are an advanced WP user and feel confident in making adjustments to this plugin, there are plenty of things you will find that will make you happy such as:

Ability to fine tune your navigation links

Automatic search engine optimization of titles

Automatic generation of META tags

Ability to override titles so you can incorporate the META keywords and descriptions of your choice.

Alexa Rank or WP-Stats-Dashboard: As you are trying to improve your rankings, it is nice to know where you stand. Using one of these plugins will give you up to date information on where you rank in Google, on Alexa, Technorati rank, etc. Alexa Rank is more simplistic and will give your Alexa ranking information. WP-Stats-Dashboard is will give you information on Google PR, Technorati, Alexa, etc.

Anyone who has a WordPress blog will probably find that at some point it is necessary to perform a search and replace on your blog. This is usually necessary when something odd is happening and you just can’t figure out what or where the problem is. For example there may be a weird character in blog entries, you’ve found a typo and are concerned that it may appear in other areas of your blog or maybe you want to rename your keywords. Whatever the reason, there is an easy way to do a search and replace in blog posts. This is how you accomplish this task:

The first thing you should always do is backup your files so if something goes wrong you are not left in a bind.

You can do a search and replace with a WordPress plugin that is called, you guessed it, the Search and Replace plugin. This plugin is used with the WordPress Admin section (WP-Admin). Simply download and install the Search and Replace plugin and you will be able to search and replace in the following areas: content, titles, excerpts, comments content and comments author.

That’s it, pretty easy, right? Of course there are more difficult ways to accomplish if you want to get into the programming aspect of a WordPress blog, but it really is not necessary to make this too complicated.

Blogs can be created for a wide variety of reasons, and if yours is a professional WordPress blog it could be beneficial to your business to add a range of plugins that have a more serious edge. We all know about rate it and poll plugins, but there is an excellent range of business tools out there as well. We have gathered up 5 of the best, and we will explain why they are the best and what you can use them for.

Google Maps in Posts: We are going first to our friends over at WordPress.org, as we know they have a massive range of resources and guides for WordPress applications. They offer the Google Maps plugin as a download in their download area and can be found here http://WordPress.org/extend/plugins/google-maps-in-posts/. This means that posts relating to events can be mapped and specific locations shown, plus you can add a ‘home’ location for yourself should you need to. You need to be running WordPress 2.2 or higher for this plugin to work.

Calendar: We think you are going to see a lot of WordPress.org for these plugins; we go back to them now for their calendar plugin. This is an excellent tool that means you can set up and manage your events calendar and share them with your users. It is simple to use. Have a look here at http://WordPress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/ for more information or to download it. It has all the usual calendar features, including a good range of viewing options from monthly view to viewing events by specific category.

WP Newsletter Plugin for WordPress: A proper plugin bundle here, if you want to be able to offer your users a newsletter and be able to handle email subscribers with opt in and opt out facilities then this could be for you. You can easily set up a newsletter then download your contact list and bulk mail the letter to them. For more information visit the lovely people at SendBlaster.com where you can download all you need to get started: http://www.sendblaster.com/WordPress-newsletter-double-optin-widget/

Business Directory Plugin: This really does what it says and provides you with a plugin that allows you to have a directory on your blog that you can either add to or invite your users to add their details to, depending on your business needs. The site offers a good range of supporting documentation and help pages, and you can find all of this and download the plug in here: http://businessdirectory.squarecompass.com/

FAQ Builder: Another excellent business tool for your WordPress is a FAQ section meaning you can offer your clients important information that crops up regularly in a more sensibly structured way than a series of posts to the blog, which gets messy and isn’t very user friendly. The FAQ builder from Square Compass is an excellent tool that isn’t hard to get to grips with and comes from the same people as the business directory people, so again you get a good level of supporting documentation and help pages. Download the FAQ Builder here: http://faqbuilder.squarecompass.com/

Hopefully you have found at least one plugin you can use that will enhance the usability of your WordPress blog. Presenting a professional image will tell your visitors that you are serious about your blog and that you want to give them a good experience while they are visiting your site.

Word Press is one of the most popular blogging platforms available for websites on the Internet today. It is popular because of its ease of installation, ease of use and the ability to customize options. Most sites that use it especially sites that are using blogging to earn revenue either because it is a business site or a personal site generating AdSense revenue want to ensure positive SEO or search engine optimization. In order to do this site owners encourage users to stay on their site as long as possible and to be interactive. This often means users are encouraged to contribute to posts of their own and comment on existing posts.

In order to encourage this, most site owners try to make it as easy as possible for users to be interactive. Sometimes this means not requiring users to register and allowing them to remain anonymous while they are posting. This is a great way to increase SEO but it also often lends itself to easy spamming as well. Off topic posts, user generated spam and automated bots exploiting Word Press are often the result. Fortunately, WordPress has several tools available to assist with spam blocking. The top 10 are:

Simple Captcha: This plugin adds a captcha to your comments. A captcha is a mixture of words, images or numbers that are slightly distoreted and not easily readable by bots but easily discernable by people. When an automated bot tries to make a comment it identifies the post as needing a captcha before submitting. This fools the bot and dissuades it from posting.

WP-Spam Hitman: This plugin uses a hit point system to identify and isolate spam posts. The way hit points work is that patterns are identified that point to the probability of the post being spam. This is a powerful way to eliminate or reduce spam on your blog. You can set it to automatically delete detected spam posts, identify it as spam or automatically put questionable posts into moderation.

Spam Karma: This second iteration of the popular plugin is no longer in development but still is a powerful tool to use for WordPress sites in preventing spam. The code is updated and works well currently. It uses a similar set of analytics as WP-Spam Hitman and is also able to prevent pingback spam.

Automattic Kismet or Akismet: This plugin specifically combats comment spam for bloggers who allow users to post comments from posts. It is available as a bundled plugin when you use WordPress and all you need is to request an API key for its use. It will identify and eliminate comment spam for your blog and works effectively.

Bad Behavior: This is a tool that can be used on any PHP site to prevent spam so if you run WordPress but also have other PHP functions this is a great all inclusive tool. It provides an extra layer of security for your whole site preventing cracking as well as email harvesting. This is not a WordPress plugin but a separate tool that runs independently. However, it is compatible with WordPress and works well.

Simple Trackback Validation: This plugin verifies trackbacks to determine if they are bot driven and spam. It does this by verifying the IP and host machine match and verifying the URL to ensure the post link is contained. If neither of the two conditions are met it is deemed spam and not allowed. You can set options on how you want the identified spam handled and you can even log the issues to see where spam is coming from and how frequently it occurs.

Defensio: This is a service that checks for and filters spam from your blog. It is compatible with WordPress and has a proven track record. Spam is quarantined for review so you can check through it to make sure no false positives occurred. If a legitimate post is accidentally caught you can manually release it. Otherwise the spam is deleted.

WordPress has built in tools that can help you maintain spam. The WordPress comment spam codex (http://codex.wordpress.org/Comment_Spam) recommends monitoring your comments and using the moderation settings that are readily available in your admin panel.

Math Comment Spam Protection: This is a fun way to prevent bots from posting to your site by requiring any posters to answer a simple math equation before the post will submit. It will prevent bots from auto posting spam but it may also remove real life humans who can not add single digit numbers together.

Dashboard: Latest Spam (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/dashboard-latest-spam/) – This plugin will allow you to easily monitor spam so you can go through it to ensure no legitimate posts got through. It creates a widget on your dashboard listing all the identified spam so you can manually approve any false positives.

All websites and software programs require some routine maintenance from time to time in order to remain up to date. Wordpress is no exception but often people install Wordpress, continually add plugins and then forget about them. However, this can be cumbersome at best and possibly damaging if left unchecked. Therefore, a great Wordpress tip that should be adhered to is to clean up old plugins. You should schedule monthly maintenance on your Wordpress site to ensure this occurs with regularity. Simply add it to your calendar and take a few minutes each month to accomplish it. If you keep up with it, it should only take a short amount of time each session.

There are two types of plugins that should be considered for clean up, plugins that are no longer used and plugins that are outdated. Start off by cleaning up unused plugins first. This is easy to accomplish and will help you when you want to add more plugins or update the ones you already have. You won’t need to scroll through endless lists of plugins that you don’t use and possibly do not even know what they are for. You will be sure to have only the plugins you use.

Next, make sure your plugins are updated to suit your site. As up update Wordpress, you may find that certain plugins fail to work or start to have problems. Typically a plugin may need to be updated as well as the parent software to be used correctly. A danger of keeping these outdated plugins in your software is that it may contribute to security vulnerabilities and expose your site to hacking or malicious use.

Removing old and outdated plugins is a fairly simple process. First, make a list of all the plugins you want to remove and then go to the author’s site. Check to see if there are some specific uninstall instructions available. If there are, follow them so that you uninstall the plugin correctly. However, if there are no specific uninstall requirements you can remove it easily through your admin panel. First deactivate it then uninstall it. If you keep up this maintenance, you will find you have a secure and clean Wordpress administration site.

Ensuring your WordPress blog is completely secure is essential and should be a part of the initial installation as well as regular maintenance. If you neglect the process of ensuring security is a priority you may find that you are vulnerable to some malicious attacks. You may find that your blog has increased instances of spam. Or, you may even find that your blog is open to hacking from outside sources. If you are concerned with ensuring WordPress is completely secure consider these top 10 WordPress security tips and tricks:

WP Security Scan is a scanning plugin that will look for any vulnerability in your blog. This is one of the first steps you can take to protect your WordPress blog from attacks of all kinds. Once you know where your vulnerabilities are, you can protect against them using a number of other plugins.

Admin SSL is a great plugin that makes all pages and areas using passwords to use private or shared SSL or secure pages. You will need to have a SSL certificate installed. For more information regarding SSL certificates, contact your web host.

AntiVirus plugin works similarly to the antivirus software you likely have on your desk top or lap top computer. It protects the WordPress blog from any malicious programs that try to detect vulnerabilities, inject malicious code or spam your blog.

SI Captcha is a plugin that adds captcha symbols into the forms as needed. You can add them to comments, registrations or both. When using these forms you will need to type in the word that appears distorted. Bots are unable to discern the actual word and this prevents them from sullying the blog with signs ups, links and spam.

Invisible Defender is a plugin that reduces the threat of bots signing up, commenting and littering your blog with spam. If a bot is detected after installation they are not allowed to sign up or post and they are redirected to an error page. The 403 Forbidden page is where all bots will be directed to, keeping your blog spam free.

LogIn LockDown is a plugin that records the IP address of failed attempts at logging in. If there are multiple attempts within a defined amount of time to log in unsuccessfully the block of IP addresses will be blocked, preventing forced password retrieval leaving your blog open to malicious content and hacking.

Maximum Security is an all inclusive program that protects a number of different threats. It boosts your firewall to protect against malicious attacks as well as spam.

WP Sentry is a plugin that manages privacy settings so you can have a portion of your blog or the entire blog private. It requires user groups to be maintained so that you can assign permissions. Sensitive topics can only be seen by those user groups and you can prevent indexing of the posts as well.

Askimet is a spam protection program that is highly recommended and developed by the makers of WordPress itself. It checks comment posts against an up to date database of spam references to see if the comment is spam. If it is not, it is posted or you can choose from a number of options for when spam is detected. Askimet is updated regularly so that all spam instances can be caught quickly.

BackUp WordPress is a plugin that allows you to backup your WordPress blog so that if there is a problem or a disaster you can recover it from the last date of backup quickly and easily. This is a great way to prevent starting from scratch is something disastrous occurs.
